NAM Contest Judging Criteria

   
Association Alternative Newsweeklies

Judges must be journalists who:

  1. Have not worked or written for an AAN paper in the previous year, and

  2. Have an understanding of alternative-newspaper journalism Our judging is done in two rounds. In the first round (Feb.-March) at least two judges read every submission.  In the second round (April-May), panels of three review 8-16 finalists in each category.

Louisiana Press Association

Editorial - judged in mid-February/mid- March by mail-out.  Requires 30 judges.

Advertising - judged in mid-September on site.  Requires 20-25 judges in groups of 3.  Poker style judging.

North Carolina Press Association

Editorial - judged in late October/early November by mail-out.  Requires 40 judges each from two different states.

Advertising - judged in late March/early April on site.  Requires 20-25 judges
